A picture paints a thousand words.
Carry a camera in your vehicle. You never know when it may come in handy.
Hopefully you will not be involved in an accident and will have a no reason to use it for yourself. But someone else may be glad of the use of it.
When taking a photograph of any accident scene, the golden rule is "Safety", not only for you but all other road users.
Please do not stand in the middle of the motorway or road when taking a shot. Only ever photograph from a safe location such as the pavement.
If you can, try to take a 360 degree view of the accident scene. This is to include vehicles involved and anything else that may be of interest to those handling a claim.
Many photographs just show a tight shot to the actual scene and do not include the general view of the area.
The latter is always a help to someone looking at the photos later on. It gives them an overall view of what may well have taken place.
Damage marks etc to cars/vans etc are very relevant, as they may help pinpoint who might have been at fault.
If skid marks are visible on the road, do try and get a shot of these as well.
Finally all these pointers will be of little value if the camera is either not loaded with film, or has run down batteries. Yes we do know of occasions where this has happened.
